Clean Across America 2005

Each year, the Power Washers of North America sponsors an event like no other in the power wash industry. Each year contractors from all over the country donate time, equipment, and materials to various charitable organizations. For our part in 2005, we were asked to participate in what is easily the largest and most prestigious project ever attempted for Clean Across America; the cleaning of the birthplace of American Baseball, Abner Doubleday Stadium, in Cooperstown, New York.

Hundreds of thousands of square feet of concrete, countless rows of bleachers, walkways, and the building itself are on tap to clean. Having never been cleaned before, our work is cut out for us.

Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center

Below is a series from the Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center in Mansfield, Ga.
We were contracted by the State of Georgia; Department of Natural Resources to perform a complete building wash and repaint as well as a full deck restoration for both of the decks on the rear of the building.

This is an 18,000 square foot building with another couple of thousand square feet of deck space. Housed within are the offices of the Director, the local Wildlife Officers, numerous Wildlife Biologists, the Charlie Elliott Museum, wildlife viewing areas, a public education and outreach area, and a retail store.
This building is nothing less than a showcase for the State of Georgia Department of Natural Resources and mildly put, this is a job that requires a contractor who specializes in extra attention to detail and quality.

Special consideration had to be given due to the fact that the larger of the two decks is also an observation platform for the wildlife viewing area. The ponds directly under the decks and the delicate plants surrounding them presented another challenge that we overcame.
The power wash photos are impressive. The deck photos are outstanding. More especially since the building had been cleaned (at least that’s what they were billed for) recently by another contractor. We are quite confident that the results speak clearly to the level of service that we provide.

Brick Restoration

Next we have a series from the Historic West End of Atlanta. The West end has been undergoing a massive renovation over the last several years with savvy investors buying old homes and restoring them to previous grandeur.
This particular home is undergoing a similar renovation and needs paint removal.
Sadly, the painters made a terrible mess by spraying paint all over. Getting paint off of brick can be hard enough, but couple that with the fact that this home is very nearly 100 years old and the problem becomes interesting.
To compound the issue, local thugs had stopped by to tag the house with graffiti. A previous contractor had attempted to remove the tagging by spraying acid and blasting away at the walls. Clearly this is not the answer as evidenced by the massive mortar blowout, brick damage, and the really sad fact that the paint remained behind. Our service, while comprehensive, cannot repair the mortar and brick, (this homeowner will need a mason for that) but we will get the paint off.

This is a personal project of ours.

We found this boat on the side of the road on 4th of July weekend 2005. The price was right and we took the plunge as it were to go a for a rebuild / restore for this old beauty. As we go along, we will have pics and updates to our project.

Anyone with experience or advise with antique wooden boats is eagerly invited to contact us with tidbits of wisdom and knowledge. Also if anyone knows a qualified wood boat mentor in the Metro Atlanta Area, we would like to engage their services.

Here is what we have been able to find out about the boat: (best reasonable guesses are used to fill in the blanks where information was lacking, but a full paper trail is to be ordered from the Mariner’s Museum)

  • 1955 Chris Craft Cavalier.
  • 17’ long
  • Painted cedar hull
  • Glass over wood lower hull
  • We believe that the transom is also glass over wood
  • inline 6 cyl Chris Craft engine, thought to be original. Turns over easily with hand tools
  • Tranny shifts easily from forward to reverse and prop spins by hand.
  • Steering gear turns easily
  • We believe that the upholstery is original.
  • All trim and brightwork is intact and in place as near as we can tell. That is, there are no unaccounted for holes in the boat where something should be attached.
  • We think the trailer may also be original or at the very least authentic to the period.

Here are a couple of pictures.
