Environmental power and pressure wash FAQ’s
We have created this page to help clients understand exactly what is meant by the term ‘environmental pressure wash’. First, our qualifications:
We are the FIRST company in Georgia to have completed testing and certification from the Power Washers of North America for environmental power wash.
- We are among only 4 professional power wash contractors invited to be members of the Gwinnett County, Georgia Surface Cleaning Advisory Committee which is developing Best Management Practices and guidelines for wash water control.
- We are consultants to the City of Covington, Georgia for development and implementation of Storm Water Control Best Management Practices.
- We are the FIRST and ONLY power wash company Certified by the City of Covington, Georgia as fully environmentally compliant for residential and commercial cosmetic power washing.
Since the beginning of the industrial age, Americans have been polluting our water supply. In 1969 this point was dramatically driven home as the Cuyahoga River erupted into flames. Naturally, the press had quite a time with this and officials were put under enormous pressure to do something immediately. Politicians finally succumbed and began a journey designed to protect and preserve our nations’ water supply. Thus was born what is commonly known as the Clean Water Act of 1972. As is typical of anything that government does, there are volumes upon volumes of technical, legal, regulatory, and exclusionary information contained within the Act, but the bottom line can be reduced to very simple terms. “Nothing but rain, down the drain” Full compliance, much like the IRS rules, is effectively impossible for normal Americans. In point of fact, nearly every one alive today violates the Act on a daily basis. For example, the strictest interpretation makes it a violation to pour a Coke on the ground. We all know that the reality of such enforcement is exceedingly remote, but the fact of the matter is, we all need to do our part to save our waterways.
With very little exception, the rules are as simple as this bit of legislation reads; Different jurisdictions may have modified the verbiage slightly, but here’s a local version.
“16.149.30 No person shall throw, drain, or otherwise discharge, cause, or allow others under its control to throw drain, or otherwise discharge into the city’s separate storm sewer system any pollutants or waters containing any pollutants, other than storm water ” - (City of Covington, 2005)
We have invested thousands of dollars and over a year of our time collecting the knowledge, gear, tools, accessories, and equipment necessary to comply with this legislation. By being involved in the process with local legislators we have been able to help shape guidelines and Best Management Practices to reasonable, rational, and logical enforcement. We have a unique perspective and special relationship with these regulators that allows us to continually be on the leading edge of change. Assuring you, our client, that we are in fact, the best qualified company for your job.
As a client of ours, we go one step further to assure you of compliance not complications. We are the first company in the area to adopt a Pollution Prevention Claim Check system. Without a doubt, other companies will follow our lead and begin the system, but you can bet, they learned it from us and are trying to catch up.
The Pollution Prevention Claim Check System is very simple. When we show up to perform your work we will fill out the form with all of the methods, protocols, and procedures performed while on the site. We sign and date the form and leave you with a copy. This assures you that if anyone ever asks, you have a paper trail to prove that you are doing the right thing. We are the first company that is so dedicated to partnering with our clients that we are willing to put it in writing. There will be followers, but we think that you’ll choose the leader.
Here’s what our Pollution Prevention Claim Check looks like
Here are some other nifty bits of info you might want to know:
- There is no such thing as a chemical that is safe to go down the storm sewer. No matter what a salesman tries to tell you, it’s just simply not true.
- Speaking of EPA approval, the EPA does not ‘approve’ products or processes. If a salesman tells you they are using EPA approved products, they are either lying, or don’t know what they are talking about.
- Let’s talk about biodegradable. Here what the American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition says:
Biodegradable: Capable of being decomposed by biological agents, especially bacteria: a biodegradable detergent. Copyright © 2000 by Houghton Mifflin Company. Published by Houghton Mifflin Company. All rights reserved. Ok. So what does this mean? It means that biodegradable soap will break down. It does NOT mean that it is safe to put down the drain.
What does all this mean to you ?? It does not mean you need to go back and take chemistry all over again. Nor does it mean that you need to call all over town and figure out who the local figurehead is. It just means you need to call us to take care of your property. We’ll take care of the cleaning, you take care of running your operations.
Compliance Not Complications
No headaches, no hassles, no problems.
We know how to effectively, responsibly, and LEGALLY deal with the wash water created at your property. The cold hard truth is that case law has dictated a cradle to grave precedent for any waste generated on a property to be the responsibility of the property owner. Simply put, this means that if you hire someone to wash down the property and they dump crud into the creek, YOU are the property owner YOU and could be named in any action taken by the government.
Don’t risk getting caught using some guy who claims not to know better,(believe us, every legitimate operator in the business who has the IQ to stand upright or the ability to fog a mirror knows about the CWA...If they claim not to know, you better send ‘em packing before they put an eye out or blow holes in the siding...) because as the property owner YOU could get in trouble too... Tickets, fines, some places like Gwinnett County even offer a free stay in the local hoosegow... Who needs all that ??
The answer is a very simple 2 step process:
Step 1 - Call us at 770-318-1032 and tell us to come to work
Step 2 - Sit back and relax while we take care of the rest.
Easy as falling off the couch...
